Built from plywood and beech, this classic Mount Ararat chess set measures 40 cm (about 16 in) across, with the mountain engraved on its board. Ararat counts as a national symbol of Armenia, and many Armenians consider it a holy mountain.
The mountain has two peaks; Armenians traditionally call the greater one Masis and the smaller one Sis. According to tradition, it was on Ararat that Noah’s Ark came to rest as the waters of the Flood went down. On this board the engraving keeps that story in view during an ordinary game of chess on the familiar eight-by-eight field.
