Pomegranates and a young girl make up this hand-carved figure in linden wood, completely handcrafted from a single piece and measuring 19 x 15 x 72 cm. The grain and natural colour of the wood change with every carving, which gives each of these girls a slightly different look.
The fruit holds a special place in Armenian tradition: it is seen as a national emblem of life, plenty and prosperity, and is associated with fertility as well. Church ornament, manuscript miniatures and Armenian art in general return to the fruit again and again. In this sculpture it is cut from the same piece of linden as the girl herself, and in an entrance hall or a bedroom the figure keeps that traditional symbol in daily view.
