Our story
Four decades of fine woodworking
In 1985 master craftsman Hrachya Ohanyan began reviving age-old woodworking traditions. In 2010 he founded the Hrachya Ohanyan company, whose backgammon, chess and wooden gifts are admired by customers at home and abroad.
Every model passes through at least 14 stages of handwork, and designs with the Mount Ararat (Masis) contour have become the hallmark of our workshop.

Handmade backgammon and chess sets
Hrachya Ohanyan creates handmade wooden backgammon (nardi) and chess sets, 2-in-1 game boards, chess and backgammon tables and wooden gifts. Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his work in 1985, and since 2010 the Hrachya Ohanyan company has carried his woodworking tradition forward.
Our boards are carved from walnut and beech and finished by hand. Many feature cast bronze details and our copyrighted Mount Ararat (Masis) outline: heirloom pieces for players, collectors and anyone looking for a meaningful gift.
Are your backgammon and chess sets really handmade?
Yes. Every model is made by hand in the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop and passes through at least 14 stages of creation, from preparing the wood to carving, finishing and fitting the hardware.
What wood are your boards made of?
Most of our boards are made of solid walnut or beech. Walnut gives a rich, dark look, while beech is lighter and holds crisp carved detail. Some designs combine wood with epoxy resin inlays. The wood of each model is listed in its product description.
What is nardi?
Nardi is the name used in Armenia and across the region for backgammon. Many families play long nardi, where all checkers start on one point and there is no hitting, as well as short nardi, which is close to international backgammon. Read our beginner's guide to backgammon.
What comes with a backgammon set?
Many of our backgammon sets include wooden checkers and dice, and some come with a branded carrying bag. See the “What's included” list in each product description for details.
Can I order a personalized set?

How do I care for a wooden board?
Keep it away from direct sun, heat and damp, dust it with a soft dry cloth and refresh the finish with natural beeswax once or twice a year. Read our full care guide.
